Top 10 tips to avoid food waste.

Many people do not realize how much food they throw away. But the amount of food waste each year is more than enough to feed the nearly 1 billion hungry people in the world. So what can Sir and Madam Waste-a-Lot do? Bosch presents the top 10 tips to avoid food waste and to manage the food from start to finish.

Labeling.

Note for notice

Forgot when you opened the milk bottle? Just write the opening date on it. This avoids wasting leftovers of opened boxes, bottles or containers.

Measuring.

Size matters

Be sure to measure or weigh food to get the right portion size. Probably all of us know what it’s like to cook twice as much spaghetti as actually needed.

Consuming.

First in, first out

It is helpful to put freshly bought food in the back of the shelf so you remember to consume older food first. This is of course also valid for the fridge.

Shopping.

Shop smart

Let your brain take a rest – use a shopping list and make sure that you know what’s in your storeroom. This eliminates jam-packed storerooms with a lack of knowledge about the expiring dates.

Cooking.

Leftover lunch

Get creative and cook one “Use-it-up meal” per week, for example a delicious Asian dish with pineapple and rice. This is the perfect opportunity to free a creative mind. And to avoid food waste.

Freezing.

Ice, ice, icy

Got some leftovers? Make sure to refrigerate them in time! The freezing stops the growth of harmful microorganisms and the decomposing of the food.

Preserving.

In the jar

A kitchen’s not a kitchen without jars. Use them to pickle and make preserves. And by the way: the jars also make a pretty kitchen decoration.

Exchanging.

Suitable substitutes

Sometimes there is no need for an extraordinary ingredient if you can find a suitable substitute in your storeroom.

Recycling.

Veggie peeling

Don’t throw away vegetable peelings – use them to cook a delicious vegetable stock. Then you already have the perfect base for the next delightful soup.

Splitting.

Stock freeze

Sometimes there’s might be a need for a small portion of sauce. Try freezing leftover sauce in an icemaker. This can be easily taken out and unfreezed at any time.
