When operating properly, all washing machines will make a gentle rattle or swooshing sound. This indicates the drum is rotating the water and clothes properly. However, if you are hearing banging, clicking, or other unexpected noises, there could be an issue that needs further attention.

There could be several reasons for the washing machine drum banging: from a problem with the washing load, weight limit, something not working with the drive pulley, etc. It is important to get a proper assessment of the issue through our official washing machine support.

Common Causes of Bosch Washing Machine Noises

The Laundry Load May Be Unbalanced

An unbalanced laundry load is one of the most common causes of loud banging, clicking, or knocking noises in a Bosch washing machine. This usually happens when heavier items, such as towels or bedding, group together on one side of the drum, causing it to become uneven as it spins. This imbalance not only leads to noise but can also affect the machine’s performance over time.

How to rebalance your Bosch washing machine:

  • Pause the wash cycle: First, consult your owner’s manual to stop the machine safely. Most Bosch washers have a function that allows you to pause the cycle and unlock the door for adjustments.
  • Redistribute the load: Open the door and check the placement of your clothes. Heavier items should be spread out evenly around the drum. Try to balance them by mixing light and heavy items in each load to avoid clumping.
  • Reduce overloading: If the machine is overpacked, remove some items to allow the drum to spin freely. A good rule of thumb is to leave a hand’s width of space at the top of the drum.
  • Restart the spin cycle: Once the load is balanced, restart the spin cycle. The machine should now run more smoothly, with minimal noise.

The Appliance May Not Have Been Aligned Correctly During Installation

If your Bosch washing machine was not aligned correctly during installation, this can cause abnormal noises to occur. Align the appliance using a level on the appliance feet. Then, secure the appliance feet with the lock nuts. If installation is on a base, fix the feet to the base with the base attachment, which is available as an accessory. Refer to your owner's manual for more instructions.

The Washer’s Installation Surface May be Unsuitable (e.g. Wooden Floor)

Additionally, if your Bosch washer is located on a surface that in unstable, it can cause the appliance to shake and rattle when in operation. Preferably place the appliance in a corner of the room. If required, place a core board (1.2" thick and water-resistant) underneath and screw it to the floor joist.

When to Call for Professional Help

Have you checked all of the issues above but are still hearing loud or unusual noises from your Bosch washing machine? Some problems may require professional assistance. Contact a certified technician if you experience the following:

  • Persistent Loud Noises Despite Troubleshooting: If you’ve redistributed the load, checked for proper alignment, and ensured the machine is level, yet the noise continues, there may be a more serious underlying issue.
  • Drum or Bearing Issues: If you hear loud grinding or knocking noises, it could signal worn-out drum bearings or suspension problems. These parts may require expert repair or replacement.
  • Motor or Pulley Problems: Unusual noises during the spin cycle might be caused by a faulty drive motor or worn drive pulley, both of which need professional attention.
  • Electrical Issues or Error Codes: If your washer displays error codes or has electrical issues, professional diagnostic tools are necessary to identify and resolve the problem.
